Ostracizing Anxiety
Three Ways to Tame Anxiety and Reclaim Your Calm
Anxiety can feel like a restless current, pulling you into a swirl of worry and tension. But what if you could steady that current with choices you make every day? As a coach dedicated to your growth, I’ve seen how intentional shifts can loosen anxiety’s grip and bring you back to center. Here are three powerful ways to start: choosing what you consume, guarding your energy with the right crowd, and redirecting your restless mind.
1. Consume Better Food, Content, and Ideas
Anxiety thrives on instability—caffeine jitters, endless notifications, and spiraling thoughts that feed the frenzy. What you take in either fuels that storm or calms it. Start with your plate: swap sugar highs for grounding foods like oats, almonds, or chamomile tea that ease your nervous system. Then, look at your mental diet. Ditch the panic-inducing headlines or overstimulating feeds for a slow read, a mindful podcast, or a playlist that soothes.
Better inputs build a steadier you. It’s not about cutting everything out—it’s about choosing what settles your soul. Ask yourself: Is what I’m consuming right now helping me breathe, or holding my breath? Small shifts here ripple outward.
2. Guard the Energy of the Crowd You Surround Yourself With
Anxiety loves a trigger, and sometimes that trigger wears a familiar face. The friend who overanalyzes every detail, the family member who predicts disaster—they can wind you up without even trying. Contrast that with people who exude calm, who listen without fanning the flames, who help you feel safe. Your crowd shapes your energy more than you might realize.
Take a gentle inventory. Who leaves you frazzled? Who helps you unwind? You don’t need to ghost anyone—just lean into the steady ones. Seek out a circle (like ours!) where peace is the vibe. Anxiety quiets when your energy’s protected. So, ask yourself: Who in my life feels like a deep breath, and how can I stay close to them?
3. Redirect Your Restless Mind
Anxiety hijacks your thoughts, spinning “what ifs” into catastrophes. But your mind doesn’t have to run wild—you can steer it. This isn’t about silencing worry (good luck with that!); it’s about giving it somewhere better to go. When the spiral starts, interrupt it. Focus on your senses—name three things you see, hear, feel. Or pick one small, doable task: water a plant, stretch, breathe deep for a minute.
Redirecting isn’t denial—it’s control. You’re training your mind to shift gears instead of revving in place. Over time, it gets easier. Ask yourself: Where can I send my thoughts right now that feels safer? You’ve got the wheel—turn it.
